How to Repair a Motorcycle: A Beginner’s Guide to Basic Maintenance
| By Motorcycle Pit Mat Team
1. Safety First
Before starting any repair, make sure your motorcycle is on a stable surface. Use a center stand or paddock stand and consider placing a protective mat under your bike to prevent oil spills or scratches.
2. Basic Tools You’ll Need
- Socket wrench set
- Screwdrivers (Phillips and flat-head)
- Chain lubricant
- Oil drain pan
- Torque wrench
3. How to Change Your Oil
Warm up your engine for a few minutes, turn it off, and place an oil drain pan under the bike. Remove the drain bolt and let the oil flow. Replace the oil filter, reinstall the bolt, and fill with new oil. Don’t forget to check the level!
4. Chain Maintenance
Clean your chain using a chain cleaner and brush. After drying, apply lubricant while rotating the rear wheel. Check chain tension — a 20-30mm slack is usually ideal.
5. Brake Check
Inspect brake pads for wear and brake fluid levels. If the pads are thin or you notice weak braking, replace them immediately. Never ride with faulty brakes.
6. When to Seek a Mechanic
While basic maintenance can be done at home, for engine issues, electrical faults, or frame damage, consult a professional mechanic.
